LEARN STREET PHOTOGRAPHY (POV) SHOT IN ONE ARTICLE

london street photography pov style using just one lens my sony 85 millimeter 1.8 such a great lens for this style of photography in and around london it's lightweight so you can keep shooting all day long the 1.8 aperture means you get nice separation between foreground and background nice bokeh effect and shoot well into the evening with a low iso and the 85 millimeter focal length means you're not going to be shooting up in people's faces and ultimately they're not going to be up in yours i've got my gopros strapped to my chest like superman so you get to see what i see play tape so i found a nice composition here with the comet garden cart as my focus points and with those red telephone boxes in the background hopefully we'll get someone walking through any minute oh and we've got a cyclist even better shot at 640th of a second f 1.8 iso 100. so let's try this in portrait mode and see what we get i'm just going to shift my position to include some of those cobbles in the foreground [Music] yep and here's a shopper walking through now sweet i'm at the other end of common garden and here's another one of those cartwheels and we've got some pigeons walking about pigeons and pedestrians here we go f 2.8 this time 400th of a second yep so let's try one last composition in landscape f 1.8 thousandth of a second here's a lady coming into you now i'll just bring down my iso a touch so a bit of a high dynamic range shot here and i'm exposing for the daylight at the end of the alleyway there are plenty of walkways like this in the west end to throw up some interesting compositions it's just a matter of patience i just noticed the sign above my head photo go i guess that means i'm ready to shoot i've got my focus point positioned in the opening and here we go ah let's see if we can get this guy walking through 800th of a second to freeze the action i'm in theater land right now if we call it that not much in the way of shows or musicals happening but hopefully not too long before we start seeing things open again sorry i found this really cool pub mr fogg's tavern brilliant name i'm just going to try and include this canopy of lights for a bit of foreground interest i'll just move down so you can see f 3.2 single shot lovely stuff so check this out we've got a couple looking into a picture framing shot so i'm going to frame them using the lamppost in the foreground and that iron gate as a kind of art imitating a life oh lights reflecting on a shiny wall who doesn't love that so just focusing on one of those posters this stairway looks as old as london itself like a stairway to heaven bad to get something good here i'm going to position my focus point to the top of the stairs and wait for some unsuspecting person to just enter my composition oh and here we go cyclist again bridge always a popular place for street photographers and another staircase to play with here with some gorgeous handrails to act as my leading lions up to the cathedral probably a better composition this side and just another waiting game i've stopped down to f 5.6 and again i'm focusing at the top of the stairs so moody sky over london this afternoon perfect conditions some might say millennium bridge has been photographed to death and it's a challenge finding new compositions and images that people haven't seen before so let's see what we can get i'm using the foot and hand rail as a leading line 400th of a second okay here we go a couple just entering the frame ah lovely she just looked over and down at the water i'll put my focus on some pulls now and blur whoever walks into the foreground just like these two say london is still eerily quiet the strand would normally be heaving at 6 p.m rush hour i'll probably shoot until about 9 p.m and get some twilight and night shots i think it's worth mentioning the ethics and the morals of street photography for a second because i think the name of the game is to be discreet and courteous of the people around you they probably don't appreciate you taking their photograph they shouldn't even be aware that you're doing it people don't need to be featured that much in your street photography faces can be blurred they can be out of focus and they probably don't even need to be there at all  you could be taking a picture of a pigeon or an overflowing bin so just keep your distance the reason i use an 85 millimeter lens is to keep that separation between me and them and that way everyone stays happy so i'm in one of the many rat runs in covent garden and this has got to be the narrowest of all i love this old pub sign and the light reflections coming off the wall we're at 200th of a second f 1.8 and iso 1250 which is no problem for the sony a7 iii seriously you do not want to meet anyone coming the other way or you'll be hugging a stranger so this is possibly the most featured archway on instagram in fact it's unusual not to see people huddled in here on iphones exhibit a instagram selfie's about to happen a lovely street scene with all without people got those lights bouncing off the cobbles so we've got a street cleaner here to add a bit of interest shooting at 80th of a second which is probably on the slow side but he's moving pretty slow himself oh i've got some pretty cool down lighting and brick walls here it might be time for a soft portrait i'll just set up down here right we're in the heart of the west end now leicester square is just ahead of us but ridiculously quiet so i'm gonna throw a left and head down to trafalgar square to get some busy traffic scenes nelson's column here littered with teenagers with not a lot to do so i've set my shutter all the way down to 30th of a second and it's just a case of panning at the same speed as the traffic it takes a bit of patience and it's a little hit and miss here let's see if we can capture this cyclist so no street photography session would be complete without a london underground sign so let's see if we can find a cool vantage point so i think i'm just going to stay focused on the sign and hold the camera steady and let the traffic create some of that motion blur well that's me guys i'm pretty tired been shooting for about eight hours hope you enjoyed this little trip around london town hit the like button if you did and i'll catch up with you next time over.
